UPDATE: The fire is still going according to Adam Housley (FOX News) who just confirmed to me that it’s been on fire now going on 6 hours. The studio gave a press conference at 12pm EST (9am PDT). FOX News Reporter Adam Housley was there and has confirmed that the studio film vaults ARE SAFE. So that’s great news, because that aside from the loss of human life was our biggest concern. We’re getting word that the “King Kong” ride and set to “Back to the Future” were both totally destroyed. This comes as sad news but at the same time they can be rebuilt. Also The Chicago Tribune has some photographs up from the fire and CNN.com has posted a video clip (without sound) showing the fire up close, featuring a chopper trying to douse the fire from above with water. This didn’t seem to work all too well. So far I hear that 3 firefighters have been injured.
Here you’ll find quotes from a CNN article just recently update.
“Between 40,000 and 50,000 videos and reels in vaults were damaged,” said Ron Meyer, chief operating officer of Universal Studios, The Associated Press reported.
“Duplicates are kept at another location,” he told AP.
“Fortunately, nothing irreplaceable was lost,” Meyer told CNN. “The video library was affected and damaged, but our main vault of our motion picture negatives was not.”
